  7. End of FAQ

  1. Installation and Setup
  2. I thought I'd clear something up before I start telling how to install and set up this game. The version I downloaded is from Compile's web page [Which is no longer available]. In case you've highlighted, copied, and then pasted the FAQ onto a word processor, this FAQ and Gense Adventure can be found on Otaku World. The FAQ is in the Toys Chest FAQ Area. Gense Adventure is in the Toys Chest Games Area.

Note: The version of Gense Adventure on Otaku World is bundled without DirectX 3 to reduce the size of the download (the assumption was that other games on Otaku World also require DirectX and it was felt that the visitors of Otaku World would only want to download DirectX only once). The following instructions work for Otaku World's archive as well except that DirectX is not part of the package.

    1. How to install

After you've downloaded the auto-extracting .EXE file, when your ready to install, run the .EXE file. On the window that comes up, type in a place on the hard drive where you want the files for Gense to be extracted (normaly C:\TMP\GENSUIP (replace C with the hard drive letter)). The button on the lower left (your left) is the Ok button, the one next to it is Cancel, and the button next to the text box is Browse. After that the Setup.exe (it's in the GENSUIP folder). Other then that, Gense Adventure has been installed. To start, just run C:\TMP\GENSUIP\GENSE\GENSE.EXE (replace C with the hard drive letter and \TMP\GENSUIP with the path you've extracted it to.)

    2. Setup.exe

The setup program should run after you've installed Gense. It can also be started by running Setup.exe. On the first menu (I only know what I know) the upper right button is for the Help file. in the lower right is a button for more options witch includes a button to install DirectX 3 (needed in order to play (upper left)), game options (upper right (to be included in future versions of this FAQ)), and an button to go back to the orignal options. As for the button at the bottom, it the one you click if you want to exit.

  3. Controls
  4. The controls are easy to learn. On the overhead view, use arrow keys to move, the space bar is used to continue conversations (pressing the Enter key does the same), and ESC brings up the character information screen (continue on down for more information). On menus, use the arrow keys to move the cursor and the space bar (or Enter) to select the option. More controls will be noted.

  5. Menus
  6. I know that this game is filled with Japanese text, and Japanese text can't be seen on a non-Japanese computer without a program like MView (also available at Otaku World). So this part of the FAQ will cover the menus.

    1. Battle menus

As soon as battle begins, you're shown a menu of (in order from left to right) attacks, special attacks (uses MP), multi-special attacks (uses MP), items, ??? (I have no idea as what it is), and personal. On this menu, you use the left and right arrow keys to move from menu to menu, up and down arrows to pick which one you want, and the Space bar (or Enter) to select the attack. After you've picked the attack, you use the up and down arrows and the Space bar (or Enter) to select who to attack (they're listed as viewed from top to bottom). After you've done that with all three characters, sit back and watch the fur fly until the menu comes back.

    2. Character information menus

Here you use up and down arrows to switch characters, left and right arrows to switch menus and of course Space bar (or Enter) to select menus. the menus (hopefuly from left to right) are Attacks, Items, Weapons and Armor, Special Items, and two others that I have no idea of. After selecting a menu for that character, you use the up and down arrows to move the cursor from item to item and Space bar (or Enter) to use or equip (depending on witch menu you've picked) the item. Also, if there's an arrow in the lower corners of the item box, then that means that there's more items in that menu (use left and right arrows to go back and forth).

    3. Other menus

There are more menus than that in the game, but those seem to be the most important menus in the game. Other then that, other menus will be noted in the walk-through.

  7. Battle
  8. Hey, what's an RPG without fights...

    1. Battle menus

In case you've missed part 3 of this FAQ, I'll go over it again (but this is the last time). As soon as battle begins, you're shown a menu of (in order from left to right) attacks, special attacks (uses MP), multi-special attacks (uses MP), items, ??? (I have no idea as of what it is), and personal.

    2. List of monsters

When you first a monster it will have ???/??? above it's HP bar. When you find the same monster, ???/??? is replaced with the amount of HP it has with the amount of HP left. Below is a chart of the monsters in the game, based on what they look like, with their HP level and how much gold they'll drop when you beat them.

      +-----------------------+-----+------+

      | Monsters ............ | HP | Gold |

      +-----------------------+-----+------+

      | Red Dragon .......... | ??? | 500 |

      +-----------------------+-----+------+

    3. Other

      Q. What do the different types of Snake and Warrior mean?
      A. Well there's 2 different types of snakes, one's green and the other's a rust-like brown. As for the warriors, they attack in twos, one of them has a mustache and the other has a low brow.

      Q. Where's a red dragon?
      A. See walk-through.

  9. Walk-through
  10. This is your basic walk-through with some added notes, make sure to to look closely at what I have for each area, you'll never know where you'll find 100 gold without fighting...

    1. Beach path

Here the three characters (a tiger that packs a punch, a cat/girl that always has something up her sleeve, and a dog that knows his way around a sword) get to the outskirts of the town with a little conversation. After that you can pick a fight with some monkey men by going north, or just go ahead and head for town (there's nothing to the north beach path so I'll go on to the town).

    2. Town

In town there's some different things you can check out. In the shop there's a menu between (from top to bottom) Items, Armor & Weapons, or just Cancel. If you're shopping for weapons and armor, be prepared because each of them cost 2000 gold!!!

If you're light on cash then go to the pub. Talk to the guy on the right side of the counter and pick the top choice when you get the menu (it's kinda a yes-or-no type of thing). After that, you'll be taken to a dusty room with broom in hand. The object is to sweep up all the dust in one continuous sweep. If the guy comes into the room and you're not done, then you'll need to get the rest in the exact amount of moves as there is dust (i.e., if there's 5 dust on the floor then you'll need to get it in 5 moves). If you take too long then he'll get mad and start to take away from the amount of gold he was going to give you. Get it all done before he comes in or before he gets mad and he'll give you about 100 gold. Then he'll ask if you would like to do that again (top option is yes, bottom is no).

If you're low on HP and/or MP, then go to the inn and talk to the lady on the left side of the counter. When asked if you'll stay for the night pick yes or no (top option is yes, bottom is no).

Don't bother with the hospital because there's nothing there.

There is something kinda out of place at the public restrooms, you can check out what I mean or just skip it (it's not important to what I know).

If you're done sightseeing, then head west to the Mountain Foothills.

    3. Mountain Foothills

There's nothing here but monsters, go ahead and fight your way through here. Other then that, it's nothing but a path from the Town to the Temple.

    4. Temple

On the outside of the temple, you'll notice a guy standing at the edge of the temple. All he can do is give information. After you've entered the temple, there's 2 stairways down from the 1st floor, one leads to a hallway with 2 doors, the other has a hall with 1 door. Go ahead and check out the hall with the 1 door, in the room you'll find two boxes, in one of them you'll find a new attack for the dog guy (sorry but I don't know the characters' names because all of the game is in Japanese). Then check out the hall way with 2 doors. You'll find that one of them is locked so the key must be in the other room, right?

Well, go into the other room and you'll find 3 tiles on the floorand a sign. Go up and read the sign and it will give you a choice (top = Stand on tiles, bottom = Don't stand on the tiles). Pick the Stand on Tiles choice and watch what happens next. After a bit the tiger guy wakes up alone. After he's up, go down to find the cat/girl. From where she was standing, go up and you'll find a switch (top = Hit it, bottom = Leave it alone). Hit the switch then you'll hear something open up. After that, find the dog guy and head up the stairs. You'll find yourself outside. From there, head back to town and get better weapons and armor from the shop, then go back in the temple.

Remember that locked door? Go to it and you'll find that it's wide open. Inside the room you'll find a box (top = Open it, bottom = Leave it be). Open the box and you'll find something, soon you'll find yourself fighting 2 red dragons. After beating them up, someone will run into the room to find your characters with the item, then they'll go ahead and open a can of whoop-a** on you. After that, only Japan knows...

  11. Other questions
  12. Q. Why is there a bunch of things where the word should be?
    A. Japanese text can't be seen on a non-Japanese computer without a program like MView. A trial version copy of Multi-View is available on Otaku World in the Toys Chest Utilities area.

    Q. What's that thing in the restroom?
    A. I don't know, but I thought I saw one under my dad's bed (not!)

    Q. What's that thing in the restroom for?
    A. I have no idea.

    Q. How can I bring my characters back to life?
    A. That blue bottle can do more then just restore HP.

    Q. What do you meen by "only Japan knows"?
    A. Ah, good question, and I got the answer in my E-Mailbox. This is the reply from Compile after I asked how I could get a copy of one of their games called Blitz Runner...

    Dear sir.

Thank you for your E-mail, and I'm sorry to be late to write. I'm happy with this.

I'm sorry, we don't sale Blitz Runner and other games in from my company to foreign cuntries. I

have no idea. We don't take route it.It is onry Japan.

    Q. How can I get Gense Adventure?
    A. Look at the answer to the last question.

    Q. Why does Gense not respond to the keyboard?
    A. One of the things needed is DirectX version 3. I too had this problem only to find that I didn't have DirectX version 3. My advice is to download it off of Compile's web page at http://www.compile.co.jp/jp/game/ds/discst/download/gensuip.html

Or you can use DirectX 5 which is available on Otaku World in the Toys Chest Utilities Area or on Microsoft's site in the DirectX area.

    Q. In battle, what happens when that word appears over the top of the screen?
    A. In battle, sometimes you'll pick an MP attack and a word will appear then back away as it moves to the top of the screen. When that happens, whoever's using the MP attack gets it upgraded. For example, say you picked the triple kick attack for the cat/girl, before she attacks, the screen darkens and that word appears, when she attacks instead of doing 3 kicks, she'll do 4 making it a quad kick attack.

  13. End of FAQ
  14. Yes, this is the end of this FAQ. I'd like to thank Otaku World for being the great Anime site that it is, Compile for making great games like Gense Adventure, Blitz Runner, and Tales of the Float Land, and I'd also like to thank the site that has this faq on the Internet.
