Java Kamishibai Viewer v1.4.3
This is a preview version of the java-based version of the Kamishibai viewer. It is fully functional, and has been tested under Windows XP (32-bit), Vista w/SP2 (32-bit) and Windows 7 (64-bit). The java version of the viewer has most of the features of the Windows-based version with only a few differences. Also, this version does not include any stories; see below for two stories that are compatible.
Note: The Java Kamishibai Viewer does not work with previous story archives (due to the image file format). In the near future, all of the existing story archives are to be converted to work with the Java Kamishibai Viewer. If you are enterprising, you can convert the images yourself of your favorite story to .png and update the gamefile.txt to use the .png files.
Java Kamishibai viewer v1.4.3:
  1. Bug Fix: Images loaded directly from zip files sometimes are not displayed.
  2. Bug Fix: Occasionally, text in the story would spill out onto the right border by a few pixels.
Java Kamishibai viewer v1.4.2:
  1. Bug Fix: The number keys ('1' through '4') could not be used as hot keys for the links while a story was running.
  2. Bug Fix: The dialog box for browsing to a new base story folder has been changed to follow the native operating system's look and feel.
Java Kamishibai viewer v1.4.1:
  1. Bug Fix: The New Game dialog box would not open if there was no folder named Stories in the same folder as the Kamishibai Java .jar file.
Java Kamishibai viewer v1.4.0:
  1. New: supports reading directly from the zip archive. No need to unpack to view!
  2. Change: Supports only .png files for images; .bmp files will not work.
  3. Change: Cannot delete unused resources from the Unused Resources dialog box.
  4. Change: Cannot select sound device; this is not necessary under Java as the best device is selected automatically.

This is a java archive (.jar) file. If you have Java already installed, you should be able to download and run directly.
Requires Java SE 6!
 
Important! The java version of the Kamishibai Viewer can read zip files directly so there is no need to extract the contents of the zip file. Just put the zip file in a story folder you create then go into the Kamishibai Options and browse to that story folder. The Kamishibai viewer remembers the story folder you selected so you need change this only once.
Note: Stories are still created in the same was as before, as described in the Kamishibai FAQ tutorial. And yes, the stories folder can hold both zip files and your own stories being created.
